Great and Holy Week

stavrosis

Undoubtedly this week is the greatest week of the year for the Christians. In Pissouri we already have the Church's Easter Celebrations program ready and published in our website. It is on the main page (left hand side at the posters). You can print it so you can visit the Church at the right time. Also, this time of the year is where you will see the well known Flaounes and Tsourekia. More Easter Traditional games will take place in the square on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday followed by Greek and Cypriot traditional Dancing.

POISONING!!! URGENT NOTICE

IS THERE NOWHERE SAFE TO WALK DOGS IN CYPRUS AND SHOULD WE BE EATING FISH THAT IS CAUGHT LOCALLY

Let me start by saying I have lived in Cyprus for 11 years, I love this country and the people I have met are mostly kind and generous, however, on Sunday 26th February, at 8.00am I and my friend walked our 4 dogs along Melanda Beach, Avdimou towards Pissouri, a walk that we have taken nearly every week for the last 9 years sometimes with my grandchildren. This is one of the few beaches registered for dog walking and we have always believed it to be safe from poison and hunters. On the return from the cliffs above Pissouri the dogs ran into the first bay on the beach, as I could see some fishermen winching in a small fishing boat onto a trailer I whistled them back and they returned immediately. Unfortunately, within minutes they all started to display signs of poising, within the 10 minutes it took to fetch the car the smallest, a Miniature Pincher had died, the second a large Lab x was in a coma and the third was going through the worst convulsions I have ever had to witness.  By the time we arrived at the vets in Avdimou 5 minutes later, all three dogs were dead. The forth, thankfully, had eaten enough grass to vomit the small amount of poison she had ingested and with further medical treatment survived.

The police were called (at one time there were four police cars outside the vets), and an official police photographer came from Limassol to record the autopsy which was completed on the Miniature Pincher.  The vet said the only thing in her stomach was 'a small handful of Fish Food which smelt strongly of insecticide', she also had massive internal bleeding..  After three hours spent giving statements and taking the police to the beach, every one agreed that there was evidence of  the dogs having ingested a very strong poison, stronger than Lanate which is a banned substance.  The question we asked is why would poisoned fish food be on a beach that is used by families and what would fishermen be using it for?

The general view from locals and the vet is, that some fishermen use the poisoned fish food to kill fish, which are then scooped from the surface, gutted and either 'used for their personal consumption' as suggested by the police - or as is more widely believed sold for public consumption.  Unfortunately, whilst it is known that this practise occurs, as expected, no one will admit to knowing any one who uses this method.

Since that fateful Sunday we have discovered that in the last three months a further 6 dogs and 3 cats have died a similar death within this area. But because they were not reported and autopsies were not carried out the police are treating this as an isolated incident.

The evidence is that this fish food was either deliberately thrown to dogs by the fishermen in the bay or, carelessly left on the beach where a child could have have picked it up.  As there is a strong possibility that the poison could be entering the human food chain, the Avdimou Vet has urged the police to take action and notify the relevant Government bodies of this Public Health issue.  The police have advised us that as they do not believe it is a risk to public health, nor do they have the resources or the finance to pursue a case of poisoned dogs.  So unless my friend and I find the fishermen WITH the poisoned fish food no further action will be taken.

Although we are mourning the loss of our dogs we are more concerned that a child could have picked up the poison or witnessed their own dog going through that terrible death.   Are the police really waiting for the the death of a child from picking up poison on the beach or through eating contaminated fish before they take this matter seriously.

I for one won't be eating local fish unless I know and trust who has caught it.

VILLAGE COUNCIL !!!???

Does anyone know where are the new village Councilors? for the past few meetings a group of 5 councilors won't show up at the meetings. As you may already know, the village council is consisted by A. The Muktar (Chairman) and B. 8 councilors. After the elections last December, the new Councilors have signed a paper that says that they will all work together for the sake of our village. The village right now has 100's of problems, including potaple water supply, houses in the middle of lakes, landslides, etc.

The Muktar has already managed to organize 10 meetings but the group of 5 councilors refuse to show up at the meetings. They haven't show up to at least 4 meetings. Tonight is the latest one (28th of Feb).

So ... do we have a village council or not? We all have same problems in the village but some prefer to look only for their own personal interest! Can anyone of the 5 give us a decent answer to this?

ON THE EDGE ! getting closer for Asprokremmos dam to feel up!

Arminou's water reservoir is already FULL! Arminou's reservoir is the one that is responsible for our drinking water. A huge river is coming off the dam to the valley of Fasoulla ending to the sea. The picture is taken next to Kouklia village.

LET IT RAIN !!!

It seems that this January and generally the Winter of 2012 will be rainy. At the moment we had 33.6 Million of Cubic Meters flowing in our Damps (for January 2012). In contrast with last year, this year we have 54% water in the dumps (last year - same time was 48.7%). Let's hope it keeps raining. Water in Cyprus is very precious especially in the Summer. You can always check the dams here

NEW SCAM! BEWARE !!!

There have been several call-ins at my shop asking me about some phonecalls they had from "Microsoft" from India. At no way those phonecalls are real. They are scams! It seems that they found new ways to take money from people. BE WARE ! IF YOU ANSWER JUST HUNG UP! DO NOT TRUST THEM !!! as long as you have your computer fully updated with a decent antivirus you have nothing to worry about.

UPDATED: New Village Council first meeting today 6pm

Our new councillors are having their first meeting this Thursday at 6pm. Stay tuned for first results of the meeting. What i can say right now is that something is going again in the background as we had with the elections period.

(05/01/2012) UPDATE: As far as we know until now, we finally have working groups! We used to have working groups in the previous councils but never worked. Let's hope this 5-Years turn would become workable. The announcement of the groups will be done officially from the Village Council through the Executive Secretary Petros Foutas. We will announce it as soon as we have them.

1st of Of the Year 2012 at Pissouri Beach

For those who haven't visited the beach yesterday i have to say that they have missed the nice big waves at our seashore. An extremely unique Rainbow settled in the middle of the sky without beginning or ending on the earth was covering the sky yesterday noon. That happened because of small crystals on the higher level of the sky. It was like raining up high without reaching the ground. Enjoy the pictures.

As you can see our beach had visitors during day time as the view was spectacular with the huge waves covering the beach area.

! Pissouri 2012 ! HAPPY NEW YEAR

2012

What we expect on 2012 for Pissouri? We expect of course the 7 New Wonders of Pissouri

1. New Council Members (6 out of 8 councillors are new)

As you all know 6 out of the 8 councillors are brand new. We are expecting of course their best decisions for our community. We as Team Pissouri will do our best to keep you up with their decisions.

    2. The New Cemetery is in progress

Many of the residents are thinking about “What’s going on with the new cemetery” the news are very good. The ex-village council proceeded with the tender who is going to landscaping of the new cemetery and we hope it will start late January or February.

      3. Pissouri Bay re-Landscaping

This March, the beach pavements will be changed (hopefully) to something better as everybody was complaining about the showers, the changing rooms and the walking pavement.

        4. New Potable water Reservoirs

Some new bigger reservoirs will be built before the Summer Season so we don’t have noticeable water cuts and we hope we will get rid of the water problem in the case of water cuts (i.e. lower houses first and higher very last).

          5. Museum & Snack Bar at “Pissouri Cultural Centre”

After the Openings of the “Old Police Station” former “Pissouri Cultural Centre”, the new Village Council will go for a tender for the building itself so it will be independent from the Village Office (bills, cleaning, etc).

            6. New Maps (2nd Edition coming soon) and Big Maps

For those who haven’t received yet the Village Map, you can take it from Markos Internet Spot or at the Village office. That is the 1st Edition of the local map as I am working already on the new edition. Big maps will be available soon in certain points of Pissouri. Any feedback is welcome.

              7. Pissouri Fishing Refugee and Land Sliding.

The New Year will bring the final results about the New Fishing Refugee at the Black Rock area. All depends on how soon they finish the Marina of Polis area. Land Sliding in the front of the village will be soon ready (supposed to be ready by September 2011). The work done there is remarkable. It will also give us a brand new parking place as the parking lots we have are not enough. Good spot only 1 minute from the Village Centre.

This is what expect to see this Year. Also on the 17th of February will be the date of Announcing the “Book Of Pissouri” which is sponsored by the CO-OP bank.

Team Pissouri Wishes everybody for a Happy and Prosperous New Year 2012

                POSTAL SERVICE DELAY

It seems that all the postal originated from UK and GREECE are extremely delayed because of the delayed arrival of the postage to the hubs of Cyprus Postal Service in Larnaca and Nicosia.

It was a privilege for Pissouri to have as our Aphrodite C3A branch guest on Monday Dr Michael Sarris – surely the only man who can enthral and amuse an audience for nearly an hour on the subject of the world recession and its effect on Cyprus.   The Amphitheatre lecture room was packed.   Questions after the talk were also lively, and there was simply not enough time to take questions from all the hands that shot up in the audience.   The meeting was again followed by an excellent lunch in the Square, this time at O'Vrakas.   Thanks not only to Dr Sarris for taking the time and trouble to come and visit us in Pissouri, but to all C3A members who ensured the successful and smooth running of the event.   We were delighted at the announcement the following day that Dr Sarris had been appointed Chairman of the Laiki Bank.

                HOME NEEDED URGENTLY

No takers for this dear wee fella since posting this a week ago.   Ken and Pat will hold on to her for the time being, so she is here if anyone wants to take on this lovely little dog.   She is blissfully happy but it is taking a long time for her to gain weight.

In the meantime ......  PLEASE REMEMBER, when you are shopping at Papantoniou, to give them the telephone number of  PAWS (it is pasted on the tills) so that your points, if you do not want them, can go towards this excellent dog rescue charity.    I have a great pile of points on my account which mounted up before I started passing the points directly on to PAWS.   Every time someone keeps a rescue dog in the Village I use the points to hand over the equivalent in points to cover the cost of neutering/speying the dog.

(You can, of course, also hand your Papantoniou shopping points over the the Friends' Hospice if you prefer).

Believe it or not, this is a Pissouri puppy, rescued at the top of the Village in a dreadful state.   Ken and Pat who simply could not leave her starving and abandoned, are not in the best of health themselves, and cannot keep her.   She is so happy with them, but because they cannot keep her they drove her all the way to PAWS, only to be told that the shelter is bursting at the seams and could not take her.

They are keeping her for a few more days in the hope of finding  a permanent loving home for this dear little six month old puppy in desperate need.  But, in this situation, if you can help with a temporary home, until we find a home or until PAWS can find a space, anything will be appreciated.   Please phone us on 25 222802 if you can help in any way at all.

                CENSUS

The Government census, which is carried out every 10 years, began yesterday on 1st October and will continue for two months.   In Pissouri, the census is being conducted by Valantis, whom many of you will have seen in the Village.   He is carrying out a modern, hi-tech census door to door.

The Cyprus Mail, in a report by Poly Pantelides published on September 29, reports that “When completed, the census should be able to give a current view of Cyprus’s demographics: who lives where, their education, their employment status, religion, language, place of birth, nationality...” and  “the census will include all residents in the Republic including non-Cypriots who have either lived or intend to live in Cyprus for at least a year”.   They also report: “they will ask household members to fill in a personal questionnaire as well as questionnaires on the household composition and the housing unit itself”.    (Full report:   http://www.cyprus-mail.com/cyprus/population-census-starts-saturday/20110929 )

The information collected is confidential to the Statistical Service.   Personal data will be available to Government bodies only in exceptional circumstances, but the analysis of the information will be particularly interesting given the demographic changes in Cyprus over the last 10 years – and will certainly be of particular interest to those of us living in Pissouri.

                DEATHS

We are very sorry to pass on news of the deaths of two residents yesterday,  the young English lawyer Sarah Brown,  and Mrs Penelope (Pilou) Liasi, at the age of 92.   Mrs Liasi was the much-loved mother of four daughters and one son, and amongst her descendants still in the Village are her daughter Galatia, mother of Yioula from Tomas’s supermarket of the same name, Ioulia, wife  of Tassos from the Grocer shop down at the Bay, Koulla, and many of her great-grandchildren.   We will pass on more information about this much-loved and remarkable lady, particularly about her lace-making skills, on the website next week.

We pass on condolences to their bereaved families and friends.
