THE CHURCH ON THE PLAYING FIELD

You have already seen the comments on this from the Village Office.

Barbara Jones has written:

“I have been thinking about the football field situation. It would not only be a community tragedy for all the youngsters and oldsters who have and use such a great facility but an insult to the whole village as so much of our taxes has been invested in the project. There must have been a feasibility study particularly if the Sovereign Base was involved, so everything had to have been done with the knowledge and agreement of the church.

If any EU funding was accessed under the umbrella of community development etc,  there would be strings attached which would mean the community project  would be protected - particularly as the church is not an essential requirement as the one he have already (and the other very local ones) serve the community . Any idea if EU money was accessed?”

Interesting thoughts, with which I am sure most of the Village would agree.   What is clear is that there is a real backlash against the proposal and people, especially the young, are appalled at the prospect.

The latest news is that the Mukhtar and the Executive Secretary have been invited to meet
the Bishop of Paphos on 2nd June to discuss the matter. We will keep you posted on developments or information that comes in.

LAUNCH PARTY – “NOT ALL BEER AND SKITTLES”
by Val Day

Inclement and unseasonable weather over Pissouri on the morning of Wednesday   19 May, in no way dampened the enthusiasm – or the thirst – of those attending the launch party of Val Day’s new book,  Not all Beer and Skittles.    Over 100 people turned out to help Val’s new baby find its legs and she was still signing copies well after the 5pm deadline.

Begun over two years ago, Not all Beer and Skittles was written as a sequel to Val’s first book, Plastic Bag Trees,  launched in December, 2007 and is a humorous account of the experience of moving to, and living in, Pissouri.    Both books were published by Power Publishing of Nicosia.

Described by the author as ‘black comedy’,  both books are sprinkled liberally with tales of the expat world and stories of the family letting agency specialising in student accommodation ‘back home’ in Canterbury, Kent. She tells of the clean-up involved after an attempt to transport a Cypriot feral cat to the vet and the saga of a nineteen-year-old in a student house trying to light an electric oven with a match.

‘I expect this’ll be your last book,’ a partygoer was heard to say. ‘You must be running out of material by now.’      Val’s reply was that as long as there were Brit communities abroad and students fleeing the parental  nest, one never ran out of material!

Not all Beer and Skittles is on sale in bookshops and kiosks throughout Cyprus and in Pissouri from the Hillview,  Breeze and Panache, or from the author at valandgiles@uk2.net   (tel 99768920) price €15.

Tony is deep into reading Plastic Bag Trees for the first time, enjoying it enormously, and reading out great chunks of it to me.   These two books should be in every property in Pissouri, and possibly Cyprus!

LAUNCH PARTY – “NOT ALL BEER AND SKITTLES”
από Val Day

Ο κακός καιρός την Τετάρτη το πρωι δεν κατάφερε να μας μειώσει τον ενθουσιασμό για την προώθηση του βιβλίου της  Val Day,  Not all Beer and Skittles.

Το Not all Beer and Skittles

Το Not all Beer and Skittles βρίσκεται προς πώλησει σε όλα τα βιβλιοπωλεία της |Κύπρου και στο   Hillview,  Breeze και Panache, ή από την συγγραφέα στο  valandgiles@uk2.net   (tel 99768920) τιμή €15.

ANGLICAN SERVICES IN PISSOURI

Second Sunday at Six - Starting 13th June 2010

As noted in the Supplement, there are to be Anglican services in Pissouri, at the Amphitheatre, on the Second Sunday of each month, starting at Six.  The first service will be on Sunday 13 June, the next on 11 July.    Initially, the services will be Holy Communion, but there may be a service of lessons and carols in December.

Although these services will broadly follow the modern Anglican communion  service all are welcome.  Those in good standing with other churches are invited to take communion, and those not confirmed in any church will be particularly welcome.

AGAMEMNON

The Agamemnon cafe at the eastern end of the beach has re-opened for the summer season.

WALKS

It has been a great pleasure, since we began to publicise the walks more widely, that visitors –  both tourists and part-time residents – have been able to drop in on the walks.    “Do you keep walking through the summer?” is a frequent question.   To which the answer is “Yes, we do, and you can if you want to”.    But seriously, unless you are super-fit, it could be difficult to tackle the Saturday walks in the heat if you are not acclimatised.    By all means try the poddles, but wear a hat and bring water.

Perhaps we should change the name of the “Wednesday Walks” to “Wednesday Talks”.... the group was so busy chatting, and stopping to admire the views this week, it was hard to actually get them to walk.    Hold on:  here comes a cliché:  The Best Things In Life Are Free.    We often say here in Pissouri that this generation of retirees must be the most spoilt ever.   Out in our spectacularly beautiful countryside, enjoying the sun and the breeze, in excellent company, we are supremely fortunate.    And we all laugh about the folks far away who say “Yes, but what do you DO all day?”    (With apologies to our non-retirees!).

FEEDBACK

1.  THE VINELEAF

I have received two letters this week expressing doubts about publishing the information about the Vineleaf.    All I can say is that I entirely agree:   Team Pissouri would much rather not get involved in matters like this.

However, as I reminded both correspondents, this whole unhappy saga arose from a posting on the PRA website, by a friend of Athos’s, libelling the Mukhtar (and, as far as I know, the libel is still there).   The Mukhtar of course had to reply, and was entitled to as wide a response to this accusation on the internet as possible.

  1. 1.       TΟ VINELEAF

2.  PETROS

After the reports in Contact 76  and 77  support for Petros and the Village Office has poured in and he is in no doubt about how the Village feel:   Hands Off Our Petros!

NEW FAST FOOD OUTLET

They have been working on it for months and we understand the new take-away outlet on Palio Sholiou (around the corner from the Moonlight) is opening tomorrow.   Details next week.

NΕΟ FAST FOOD

TEAM PISSOURI

You very nearly didn’t get your Contact this week.   The boys and I are up to our necks in transferring about  1GB of material - without the database - from the old website to the new website, and it is quite a job.   But we are very, very excited about the new website.   It is going to be an outstanding tool for the Village.   How long it will take to complete pulling it together I am not sure, but we need it urgently.   There is already material on it which you need access to now (not to mention Contacts 76 and 77 – and now 78).

So some information we would like to have put out this week will have to wait till next week.

TEAM PISSOURI

THE HOSPICE SHOP

Sylvia Inman, Manageress of the Village Friends’ Hospice Charity shop, has sent the following requests:

• Does anyone have surplus fruit which could be made into jam for the shops – not more than 2 kilos at a time?

• a volunteer chutney maker would be welcome (the shop will pay for the ingredients and provide jars).    Obviously other people have also found the chutneys a desirable addition to our Cyprus lunches!    They have been really good, and an interesting assortment of unusual flavours.

• bric- a- brac would be very welcome, please, but no winter clothes at the moment, as there is no storage available.

• if you have a few spare hours, they would be grateful for any time you can give to help in the shop,

• a Hospice Shop customer is willing to pay the Hospice Shop 5c per top for pull-top can lids..... !!    Please take them into the shop before the end of June.   Maybe a good one for one of the restaurants?

• And Greek books and magazines are welcome – they can be left either at the Shop or at the Book Sale every second Wednesday 11 am – 4 pm.

Sylvia Inman,

THE INTERNET:  A 21st CENTURY HATE CAMPAIGN

Any decent person who has recently seen the Pissouri Residents’ Association website will rightly be appalled at the hate campaign directed against myself and Tony.

1. Much of what is being posted is libellous and abusive

2. Some of the postings are entirely fabricated

3. The PRA Committee has specifically endorsed these postings on their forum.

Thank you to those of you who have contacted us in disbelief at the spiteful tone and content of these postings and in support of the work that we are doing with Team Pissouri.   As some of you have pointed out, it is sad to think that the postings on that website are causing real damage to both Pissouri and its community life.   We will continue to publish Contact as part of Team Pissouri, to promote and support Pissouri and to unite those who live here by providing useful, informative and wholly independent weekly news.
