On Tuesday evening, the Executive Secretary to the Village Council circulated a message to everyone expressing the Council’s delight at the success of the weekend’s Easter celebrations in the Village. The solemnity of the religious services was followed by the joy of the resurrection reflected by two days of Village festivities in the packed Square. This was Pissouri Village at its best: a relaxed and wonderfully happy community occasion. Undoubtedly, all of us who attended would want to pass on our thanks not only to the Mukhtar and the Council, but to the Council staff and everyone who threw themselves into the work of making such a success of the Easter weekend. The adults enjoyed themselves as much as the children.... and some superb photos and videos were taken to record this special event for the future. Enjoy them!
Την Τρίτη το απόγευμα ο γενικός γραμματέας του κοινοτικού συμβουλίου έστειλε ένα μήνυμα σε όλους εκφράζοντας την ευχαρίστηση του συμβουλίου για την επιτυχία που είχε η φετινή διοργάνωση των εκδηλώσεων του Πάσχα. Η επισημότητα των θρησκευτικών υπηρεσιών ακολουθήθηκε από τις διήμερες οργανώσεις που σκόρπισαν χαρά σε όσους παρεβρέθηκαν στην πλατεία του χωριού. Χωρίς αμφιβολία όσοι από εμάς παρεβρέθηκαν σε αυτές τις οργανώσεις θέλουν να δώσουν τα συγχαρητήρια τους στον κοινοτάρχη και στο συμβούλιο που εργάστηκαν σκληρά για να έχουν αυτές οι μέρες επιτυχία. Υπάρχουν φωτογραφίες και βίντεο έτσι ώστε να θυμάστε αυτές τις ημέρες.
The Andreas Georgiou Memorial Football Match
There is a traditional Village football fixture on Easter Tuesday between the married and the single men. This year the match was dedicated to the memory of Pissouri’s young Marine Police Officer, Andreas Georgiou, who died so tragically last month (Contact 68) trying to rescue those aboard a yacht in trouble in a storm at Paphos. The event will be dedicated every year to Andreas’s memory.
The match was won by the singles in a close game: 4-3. It was supported by an enthusiastic and happy crowd, including many members of the older generation who were reminded of their own days of prowess on the football field!
The Village felt that the match exemplified their aim of using sport - and particularly football - as a positive force for good in the community. There are more wonderful photos and videos of all the Easter festivities which we will put on the website as soon as we can manage.
Ποδοσφαιρικός αγώνας εις μνήμην του Αντρέα Γεωργίου
Κάθε Τρίτη του Πάσχα γίνεται ο παραδοσιακός ποδοσφαιρικός αγώνας μεταξύ παντρεμένων και ελεύθερων. Φέτος ο αγώνας ήταν αφιερωμένος στη μνήμη του αστυνομικού Αντρέα Γεωργίου, ο οποίος απεβίωσε τον περασμένο μήνα στην προσπάθεια του να σώσει μια οικογένεια που κινδύνευε στη θάλασσα. Αυτός ο αγώνας θα είναι αφιερωμένος στον Αντρέα κάθε χρόνο.
Τον αγώνα τον κέρδισαν οι ελεύθεροι με 4-3 με ένα ενθουσιασμένο πλήθος να τους υποστηρίζει. Υπάρχουν καταπληκτικές φωτογραφίες από τον αγώνα και από τις εκδηλώσεις του Πάσχα.
Mr Onoufrios Forsos, 100 years old
A very special visitor to the celebrations on Sunday – another Pissouri centenarian. Mr Onoufrios Christodolou Forsos, was born at the end of April in 1910, making him 100 now! He was a shepherd in the Pissouri hills, leaving the Village only 3 or 4 times in his life before he went to live with his daughter in Limassol 5 years ago. His wife died 5 years ago. The couple had 5 children, 9 grandchildren and innumerable great-grandchildren. But the family visited their parents every weekend before Mrs Forsos died, so have maintained a strong link with the Village.
Ο κος Ονούφριος Φόρσος, ετών 100.
Την Κυριακή του Πάσχα είχαμε ένα σημαντικό καλεσμένο, τον κο Φόρσο. Ο κος Ονούφριος Χριστοδούλου Φόρσου γεννήθηκε προς τα τέλη Απριλίου το 1910, ο οποίος είναι 100 χρονών τώρα. Ήταν ένας βοσκός στα βουνά του Πισσουρίου, και άφησε το χωριό του μόνο 3-4 φορές σε ολόκληρη τη ζωή του πριν πάει να ζήσει μαζί με την κόρη στη Λεμεσό πριν 5 χρόνια. Η σύζυγος του απεβίωσε πριν 5 χρόνια , το ζεύγος έχει 5 παιδιά και 9 εγγόνια. Η οικογένεια ερχόταν στο χωριό κάθε Σαββατοκυρίακο πριν πεθάνει η κα Φόρσου.

SEA POLLUTION
The effectiveness of communication in the Village was proved this week by the decisive action by the Village Office following a report of a slick off the coast by Simon Carroll. The response of the authorities was impressive, although there is little they can do in response to the criminal action of vessels which discharge their bilge tanks offshore. Thankfully, in this case, heavy seas seem to have dispersed the slick. Petros’s letter is attached.
ΜΟΛΥΝΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΘΑΛΑΣΣΑΣ
Η αποτελεσματικότητα της επικοινωνίας εντός του χωριού αποδείκτηκε αυτήν την εβδομάδα λόγω της αποφασιστικής δράσης του κοινοτικού γραφείου μετά από αναφορά για πετρελαιοκηλίδα στην ακτή από τον Simon Carroll. Η ανταπόκριση των αρχών ήταν εντυπωσιακή, παρ’όλο που δεν υπάρχουν πολλά να γίνουν εις απάντηση της εγκληματικής δράσης των σκαφών που αδειάζουν τις δεξαμενές τους στην ανοικτή θάλασσα.Ευτυχώς σε αυτή την περίπτωση η πετραιολοκηλίδα δεν έχει διασκορπιστεί.
MOTORWAY LANDSLIP
There was a dramatic landslip on the motorway east of the main junction to the Village (Avdimou side) – in dry weather conditions, not wet (in spite of light rain over the last 24 hours), re-inforcing the worries about the instability of the sedimentary geology of the area. It will take another two days before the east-bound carriageway is back in action.
ΚΑΤΟΛΙΣΘΙΣΗ ΣΤΟΝ ΑΥΤΟΚΙΝΗΤΟΔΡΟΜΟ
Υπήρξε μια δραματική κατολίσθιση στον αυτοκινητόδρομο ανατολικά του χωριού- υπό ξηρές καιρικές συνθήκες (παρά την ελαφριά βροχή κατά το τελευταίο 24ωρο), υπάρχουν ανησυχίες για την αστάθεια της ορυκτής γεωλογικής διαμόρφωσης της περιοχής. Θα χρειαστούν άλλες 2 μέρες πριν ανοίξουν και πάλι τον δρόμο και από τις δύο μεριές.
TAX DISCS
Confirmation in the Cyprus Mail that tax discs must be removed from windscreens. The Police will not be issuing tickets, merely pointing this out to people. Strange to think that we have spent our entire lives driving with dangerous obstructions in front of us.
Υπάρχει διαβεβαίωση από την Cyprus Mail ότι δεν χρειάζεται πλέον να έχουμε στο τζάμι του αυτοκινήτου μας την άδεια κυκλοφορίας.
SUMMER
Summer must have arrived. The streets of Pissouri have been awash with water again.
ΚΑΛΟΚΑΙΡΙ
Το καλοκαίρι κατέφθασε. Οι δρόμοι του χωριού έχουν γεμίσει με τρεχάμενο νερό.
NEW BUSINESS – THE JETTY COFFEE SHOP
As always, we like to support new business ventures in Pissouri. Michael – Lakis – has opened a coffee shop down at the Bay (in the Parade of shops as you leave the mini-roundabout on Ambelones). The Coffee Shop will sell coffee (of course), cakes (made by Sam from the Limanaki – yum!), ice-cream etc, and he is hatching all sorts of summery plans to tempt our taste-buds. He is also intending to install internet services.
Michael is a Pissourian, born and bred, well known to many of us from his work in various restaurants over the years, and latterly at the Limanaki where he has been for 5 years. He is a local artist and photographer – convivial and interesting. We very much hope he will sell his own paintings. This should be a great addition to facilities down at the bay.
NEΑ ΕΠΙΧΕΙΡΗΣΗ– TΟ ΚΑΦΕΝΕΙΟ JETTY
Όπως πάντα, μας αρέσει να υποστηρίζουμε νέες επιχειρήσεις στο Πισσούρι. Ο Μιχάλης/Λάκης, άνοιξε ένα καφενείο κάτω στην παραλία (κοντά στο roundabout στους Αμπελώνες). Το καφενείο θα σερβίρει καφέ, γλυκά, παγωτά κτλ, σχεδιάζει διάφορα για το καλοκαίρι και έχει σκοπό να εγκαταστήσει υπηρεσίες διαδικτύου.
Ο Μιχάλης είναι γέννημα και θρέμα του χωριού, και σε πολλούς από εμάς είναι γνωστός από τη δουλειά του σε διάφορα εστιατόρια, και ιδιαίτερα στο Λιμανάκι όπου εργαζόταν για 5 χρόνια. Είναι επίσης ένας ντόπιος καλλιτέχνης και φωτογράφος. Ευελπιστούμε πως θα πουλήσει τους πίνακες τους μέσω της νέας του δουλειάς.
WIND TURBINES
Ali, great lateral thinker that she is, has come up with this intriguing question after seeing the pictures of the transport pickle involving the blades of the turbines:
“The great unanswered question is how did they get from Limassol to Orites? (Could be a Contacts question – prizes for the best pictures)
We drove to the construction site going through Kouklia towards Archimandrita which is not exactly hospitable for large lorries and came back through Dora, again lots of 90 degree turns. The turbines are between the two villages.
Saw the photos of the Limassol roundabout saga but that still doesn’t answer narrow village streets.
Our impression is that they are strangely elegant, seen close up. And very big”.
ΑΝΕΜΟΤΟΥΡΜΠΙΝΕΣ
Η Ali, μετά που είδε φωτογραφίες από τη μεταφορά των πτερυγίων και των τουρμπίνων της έχει δημιουργηθεί μια απορία και γι΄αυτό έχει σκεφτεί μια ερώτηση
“Πώς έχουν φθάσει από τη Λεμεσό στους Ορίτες ?
Οδηγήσαμε προς το εργοτάξιο από τα Κούκλια προς την Αρχιμανδρίτα, ο δρόμος δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα κατάλληλος για μεγάλα φορτηγά και όταν επιστρέψαμε μέσω της Δοράς υπήρχαν πολλές στροφές που ήταν σχεδόν 90 μοίρες. Οι ανεμο-τουρμπίνες είναι μεταξύ αυτών των δύο χωριών.
Είδα μερικές φωτογραφίες που είναι αναρτημένες στο roundabout της Λεμεσού αλλά και πάλι δεν πήρα απάντηση στο ερώτημα μου για το πως κατάφεραν να περάσουν από τους στενούς δρόμους των χωριών.
Από κόντα είναι κομψές με ένα περίεργο τρόπο και πολύ μεγάλες ”.
