PROFITIS ELIAS
Part of the Pissouri Easter ritual is that the Papas takes a service in each of the small Chapels around the Village. Last year we described the church of Panayia Zoodohos Pigi at Paramali (see Contact 19 on the website). This year we are looking at the traditions associated with Profitis Elias, the little white church high up in the pines on the cliffs to the south of the Old B6 as you leave Pissouri going towards Paphos.
All over Cyprus there are caves where people have worshipped since time immemorial. Many of these will have been pre-Christian sites. Profitis Elias is such a cave. The existing Chapel was built there in the early 1950s to protect the cave with its Byzantine wall paintings, replacing an earlier structure. Sadly, the effect of building the churches has been to accelerate the damage caused to the wall paintings by the smoke from candles lit in the chapel (until recently the only holders for the candles were those cut from milk tins, filled with sand....) However, because the structure of the rock is friable, the cave was in any case in a state of decay and collapse. With the chapel there, worship will be able to continue at this ancient site.
People have always gone to this church to pray and it is, in particular, where people go to pray for rain. Spyros tells me the mother of the Prophet is buried there, and that there is a book for each of the satellite churches in Apostolos Andreas. The Papas is hoping to write up the stories of each of the churches.
At Easter it is traditional for the villagers, led by the Papas, to process from Ap. Andreas in the Village to Profitis Elias for a service on Easter Monday. Until recently the service was followed by a picnic under the carobs on the plateau immediately above the Chapel, and everybody brought a contribution to the feast and Androulla’s father cooked the souvla. After the picnic everyone carried home a sprig of pine. Many of the people who attended the service also picnicked under the extensive carob trees on the field where the schools have now been built, and would race there to see who got there first.
The present chapel was built by Agamemnon Aristidis Foutas, who at the time was the only person to have a tractor, and therefore able to make an access down the side of the cliff and to transport the materials for the building. As with all the other Chapels, although each was associated with a different family from the Village, everybody helped, either with a donation or labour.
You can walk to the Chapel along the track from the New School – or you can drive it if you like. The church has been well-supported over the years, and this year Mr Foutas has again made a substantial contribution to the upkeep of the church and has had the road gritted, so it is now much easier to drive there.
ΠΡΟΦΗΤΗΣ ΗΛΙΑΣ
Μέρος του τελετουργικού του Πάσχα στο Πισσούρι είναι ότι ο ιερέας κάνει την λειτουργία σε διάφορα μικρά εκκλησάκια στο χωριό. Πέρσι είχαμε περιγράψει την εκκλησία της Παναγίας της Ζωοδόχου Πηγής στο Παραμάλι. Φέτος θα δούμε όλες τις παραδόσεις που έχουν σχέση με το μικρό εκκλησάκια του Προφήτη Ηλία, που βρίσκεται σε ένα λόφο περικυκλωμένο με πεύκα, νότια του παλιού δρόμου Β6, προς την Πάφο.
Παντού στην Κύπρο υπήρχαν σπηλιές που οι άνθρωποι λάτρευαν από αμνημόνευτων χρόνων. Πολλές από αυτές υπήρχαν προ-Χριστιανικών χρόνων και ο Προφήτης Ηλίας είναι μια τέτοια σπηλιά. Το εκκλησάκι που υπάρχει τώρα κτίστηκε στις αρχές του 1950 για να προστατέψει τη σπηλιά με τις Βυζαντινές τοιχογραφίες από μια προηγούμενη κατασκευή. Δυστυχώς, το αποτέλεσμα από την κατασκευή της εκκλησίας ήταν να επιταχύνει τις ζημιές στις τοιχογραφίες εξαιτίας του καπνού από τα κεριά που ανάβονταν στο εξωκκλήσι. Ωστόσο, η κατασκευή της εκκλησίας ήταν απαραίτητη επειδή η διάρθρωση των βράχων ήταν εύθραυστη και η σπηλιά θα κατέρεε . Με το εκκλησάκι κτισμένο σε εκείνο τον αρχαίο τόπο η λατρεία προς το Θεό μπορεί να συνεχιστεί.
Οι άνθρωποι πάντα πήγαιναν σε αυτό το εκκλησάκι για να προσευχηθούν, ιδιαίτερα όταν ήθελαν να προσευχηθούν για βροχή. Ο Σπύρος μου είπε πως η μητέρα του Πρ. Ηλία είναι θαμμένη εκεί. Ο ιερέας ευελπιστεί να γράψει τις ιστορίες για όλες τις εκκλησίες του χωριού.
Το Πάσχα είναι παραδοσιακό για τους κατοίκους του χωριού και καθοδηγημένοι από τον ιερέα ξεκίνησαν για τον Προφήτη Ηλία για την λειτουργεία της Δευτέρας του Πάσχα. Μέχρι πρόσφατα μετά τη λειτουργία ακολουθούσε πικ-νικ στην περιοχή πάνω από το εκκλησάκι, όπου ο καθένας έφερνε και κάτι για το φαγοπότι που θα ακολουθούσε και ο πατέρας της Αντρούλλας έψηνε τη σούβλα.
Το εκκλησάκι κτίστηκε από τον Αγαμέμνων Αριστείδι Φουτά, μιας και ήταν το μοναδικό άτομο που είχε τρακτερ και μπορούσε να έχει πρόσβαση στην πλαγιά του λόφου και να μεταφέρει υλικά. Όπως και με τα άλλα εκκλησάκια, όλοι βοήθησαν στην κατασκευή του.
Μπορείτε να περπατήσετε στο εκκλησάκι ακολουθόντας το δρόμο του νέου σχολείου ή μπορείτε να οδηγήσετε ως εκεί. Ο κος Φουτάς έκανε και φέτος μια προσφορά και φρόντισε ο δρόμος να καθαριστεί με τρακτέρ για να είναι πιο εύκολο για τους οδηγούς.
MRS EFTHYMIA TELONI
Another village elder passed away this week. Mrs Efthymia Teloni has died at the age of 88. She had been, since the death of her husband, very much the head of her family. She was born in 1922 in Anoyira, but was orphaned just as she was becoming a teenager. Fortunately, as was the custom then, an early marriage was arranged to Costas Teloni, a Pissourian, and they married when Efthymia was 17. Mr Teloni died eight years ago aged 93.
Undoubtedly it was a hard life in Pissouri then. Efthymia had four children: 3 daughters, Dimitra, Anastasia, and Pelagia, and one son, Andreas, who was the youngest. Efthymia was a wonderful lady, renowned for her happy and hospitable nature. No one left her home without a gift, such as a basket of fruit. Costas worked so hard at many jobs to provide a good life for his family. He was a farmer, a builder, and he also made the traditional ploughs (αλέτρο) – not only for Pissouri, but for the surrounding area as well. As well as looking after the house and raising the children, Efthymia was an excellent seamstress, not only sewing and crocheting but, like the other women of the Village, weaving the material for the family’s needs. She was, of course, like all Pissouri women, an excellent cook. She was a great animal lover, particularly of the Cyprus donkeys she grew up with in Anoyira and then Pissouri.
Mrs Teloni had six grandchildren, and one of her sisters, Eleni, lives in Australia, so the family is now – with innumerable great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces - widespread and successful. The Australian family come to visit Cyprus every year. So, until she died, there were four generations of the family around!
The word the Mukhtar used to describe Mrs Teloni was “dynamic”. He says that, if there was something that needed sorting out, she was there in the forefront of the community. Efthymia means “joy”, and this is how her life was. She was an immensely sociable lady, extending her warm welcome in her later years to the friends of Sriya, her carer. She raised a clever, successful and kind family anyone would be proud of, and must have been a very happy lady when she died. It is clear that she is deeply mourned not only by her family but by everyone who knew her.
ΚΥΡΙΑ ΕΥΘΥΜΙΑ ΤΕΛΩΝΗ
Ακόμη μια ηλικιωμένη κάτοικος του χωριού απεβίωσε αυτή την εβδομάδα. Η κα Τελώνη απεβίωσε σε ηλικία 88 χρονών. Γεννήθηκε στο 1922 στην Ανώγυρα αλλά έμεινε ορφανή όταν κόντευε να ενηλικιωθεί αλλά ευτυχώς, όπως ήταν γνωστό εκείνα τα χρόνια, τις κοπέλες τις πάντρευαν σε νεαρή ηλικία, έτσι ο γάμος της είχε κανονιστεί με τον Κώστα Τελώνη σε ηλικία 17 χρονών. Ο κος Τελώνης πέθανε σε ηλικία 93 χρονών.
Η κα Τελώνη είχε 4 παιδιά 3 κόρες, τη Δήμητρα, την Αναστασία και την Πελαγία και ένα γιό τον Αντρέα, ο οποίος είναι ο μικρότερος. Η Ευθυμία ήταν ένα θαυμάσιο και φιλόξενο άτομο κανένας δεν έφευγε από το σπίτι της χωρίς να πάρει ένα δώρο, όπως ένα καλάθι με φρούτα. Ο Κώστας δούλεψε σε πολλές δουλειές για να παρέχει στην οικογένεια του μια καλή ζωή. Ήταν κτίστης, γεωργός και έφτιαχνε επίσης, τις πλάκες για το άλετρο. Η Ευθυμία ήταν μια εξαιρετική μαγείρισσα και γνώριζε να πλέκει πάρα πολύ καλά, επίσης, λάτρευε τα ζώα και ιδιαίτερα τα γα’ι’δουράκια.
Η κα Τελώνη είχε 6 εγγόνια και η μια της αδελφή η Ελένη, μένει στην Αυστραλία, η οικογένεια της ερχόταν πάντα για επίσκεψη κάθε χρόνο.
Η λέξη που χρησιμοποίησε ο κοινοτάρχης για να την περιγράψει ήταν ΄΄δυναμική΄΄. Το όνομα Ευθυμία σημαίνει “χαρά”, και έτσι ήταν η ζωή της, γεμάτη χαρά. Ήταν μια δυναμική γυναίκα και μεγάλωσε μια έξυπνη και πετυχημένη οικογένεια που ο καθένας μας θα ήταν περήφανος.
COUNCIL MEETING REPORT
Petros has kindly provided us with the following report after last Friday’s Council Meeting:
• New Cemetery. The main item on the agenda was the presentation of the final structural and landscaping plans for the new cemetery by Nikki Georgiou of Pissouri who has a local engineering practice. The Council members were very interested in the plans and made some suggestions and asked for some changes. Following these adjustments and modifications the plans will be submitted to the Planning Department. The Council will then apply to the District Administration for extra funding for the project.
• Beach walkway. The Council continues to work on this project. Following involvement of the Public Works Department, the Council architect has been asked to inform them of the exact area which would be affected and to suggest modifications. These will focus on environmental and visual impact in order to make the work acceptable to the Planning Department and environmental departments.
• Papantoniou: New plans for change of use and the extensions made outside the building have been submitted to the Planning Department and new planning permissions are awaited for the extensions.
• Defibrillator Training. The main training session, following the introductory session, will be on Monday 3rd May in the Council Office.
ΣΥΝΕΔΡΙΑΣΕΙΣ ΣΥΜΒΟΥΛΙΟΥ-ΑΝΑΦΟΡΑ
• ΝΕΟ ΚΟΙΜΗΤΗΡΙΟ. Έγινε μια παρουσίαση για την τελική δομή του νέου κοιμητηρίου από τη Νίκη Γεωργίου. Τα μέλη του συμβουλίου έδειξαν ενδιαφέρον για τα σχέδια, έκαναν εισηγήσεις και ρώτησαν αν μπορούν να γίνουν αλλαγές. Το συμβούλιο θα κάνει αίτηση στην τοπική διοίκηση για επιπλέον χρηματοδότηση.
• ΠΑΡΑΛΙΑ. Το συμβούλιο συνεχίζει τις εργασίες σε αυτό το έργο. Μετά από την ανάμειξη της υπηρεσίας δημόσιων έργων, ζητήθηκε από τον αρχιτέκτονα του συμβουλίου να τους ενημερώσει για την περιοχή που θα επηρεαστεί και να εισηγηθεί αλλαγές.
• ΠΑΠΑΝΤΩΝΙΟΥ: Νέα σχέδια για αλλαγές στη χρήση και στις εξωτερικές προεκτάσεις του κτιρίου έχουν δωθεί στην πολειοδομία.
• ΕΚΠΑΙΔΕΥΣΗ ΑΠΙΝΙΔΙΣΤΗ. Θα ξεκινήσει εκπαίδευση αυτή τη Δευτέρα στις 3 Μαίου στο κοινοτικό συμβούλιο.
BUS PETITION
Many, many thanks to everyone who has signed the petition so far. It is clearly something that really matters. It would be great to have a real push over Easter so, if you know anyone who hasn’t signed yet, please encourage them to do so, or if you want to take the initiative and circulate sheets yourself just let us know and I will drop some off to you.

OPERATING LICENCE REFUSALS
In Contact 68 we reported on attempts to damage the reputation of the Mukhtar and his family. This is evident on the Pissouri Residents’ Association website, where there is a false and damaging insinuation that the Mukhtar is guilty of nepotism.
In response to this smear campaign, the Village Council, whose decisions in this matter have been unanimous, has now issued a full statement of the facts. See "Village Office" tab on the Home Page.
ΑΡΝΗΣΗ ΑΔΕΙΑΣ
Στο Contact 68 αναφέραμε κάποιοες προσπάθειες να καταστρέψουν τη φήμη του κοινοτάρχη και της οικογένειας του από την ιστιοσελίδα Pissouri Residents’ Association όπου υπάρχει ψευδής υπονοούμενο που κατηγορεί τον κοινοτάρχη για νεποτισμό (οικογενειοκράτια).

NATURA 2000
The Village Office recently reported that the Council has applied to the Planning Authority to have all land at present proposed for inclusion in Natura 2000 revert to agricultural (Γ3) zoning. This is apparently because the Council is not satisfied that there are sufficient safeguards in the proposals for the rights of the landowners and adequate compensation arrangements.
Agricultural zoning allows a 10% building quota which would, in my opinion at least, be disastrous for the area concerned. However, it remains to be seen how the Central Government Planning Authority respond to this application.
Natura 2000 is a directive from the EU for the establishment of protection zones for bio-diversity. However, the consideration of the entire matter will take years to complete and, whatever the outcome, any building in these areas will still be subject to the caveat that roads have to be installed, and that is an equally ponderous procedure which has to meet an array of legal requirements... so for the time being Pissouri’s precious coastal headlands are safe.
Natura 2000
Το κοινοτικό γραφείο έχει πρόσφατα δημοσιεύσει ότι το συμβούλιο έχει κάνει αίτηση στην πολεοδομία όλες οι περιοχές που είναι συμπεριλαμβανομένες στο δίκτυο της Natura 2000 να γίνουν αγροτικές ζώνες. Αυτό έχει γίνει διότι το συμβούλιο δεν είναι ικανοποιημένο με την πρόταση που έχει γίνει σχετικά με τα δικαιώματα των ιδιοκτητών της γης.
Οι γεωργικές ζώνες επιτρέπουν στο 10% της περιοχής να κτιστούν σπίτια, αυτό κατά τη γνώμη μου τουλάχιστον, θα ήταν καταστροφικό για την συγκεκριμένη περιοχή. Εν τούτοις περιμένουμε από την πολειοδομία της κυβέρνησης να απαντήσει.
Το Natura 2000 έχει δημιουργηθεί από την Ε.Ε για να προστατέψει κάποιες συγκεκριμένες περιοχές. Ωστόσο η εξέταση του όλου θέματος θα πάρει χρόνια να ολοκληρωθεί και ανεξάρτητα από το αποτέλεσμα κάθε κτίριο σε αυτές τις περιοχές θα πρέπει να έχει τον δικό του δρόμο και αυτό θα έχει ως αποτέλεσμα μια σειρά νομικών απαιτήσεων ....έτσι, προς το παρόν, οι παράλιες περιοχές του Πισσουρίου είναι ασφαλής.

It is a pity it is taking a while to get the classifieds section of the website going well. All the time, when we are talking to people they are saying they want this or that, and I say: “Excuse me, have you put it in the classifieds?” Both the website and this newsletter are getting the widest possible coverage for Pissouri: there is no other way of reaching a maximum audience – and the classifieds are free. There is nothing, for example, even though you are in the website directory, to stop you from putting special offers in the classifieds. Svetlana’s Hair and Nail Beauty from the Bay advertised for some time for help in her salon without receiving any reply, at a time when just about everyone is looking for work.

CHARITABLE EVENTS - BIKE RALLIES - DONATIONS
Your cub reporter is not always the quickest off the mark. I was standing outside the chemist watching great packs of muscle-packed cyclists, doubled over their bikes, surrounded by accompanying police outriders, support vehicles, camera crews etc, steaming up the hill from the Hani, when I suddenly thought “wow, photo opportunity”. By the time I got my camera out all I was left with was this:

Tour of love for the “Make a Wish” Foundation
However, at exactly the same time the combined motorcycle clubs of Cyprus were in the same place, and I got this happy guy on a magnificent bike. I asked what they were up to. It was their annual rally to raise funds for the “Make a Wish” charity. (They do a 3-day circuit, the “Route of love”, around the Island every year). I suggested that they should let us know when they are coming, because it was an impressive and exciting spectacle, and they could raise funds for the charity as they go through. Let’s hope we manage to coordinate next year. Last year they raised €18,500, and they hope to raise even more this year. Even though we missed them, if you want to make a donation, I have pasted information about the Charity in the Supplement.

Εν τούτοις, την ίδια ώρα, διάφορα κλαπς μοτοσυκλετιστών από την Κύπρο, βρίσκονταν στο ίδιο σημείο, πήρα την ευκαιρία και ρώτησα ένα άντρα για το τι έκαναν όλοι μαζί και μου είπε πως έκαναν το ετήσιο ράλλυ για να μαζέψουν χρήματα για το ίδρυμα “Κάνε μια ευχή”(κάνουν μια 3ήμερη πορεία σε όλο το νησί, κάθε χρόνο). Τους εισηγήθηκα πως πρέπει να μας ενημερώνουν για το πότε θα κάνουν αυτό το ράλλυ, έτσι ώστε να μπορούν να μαζεύουν χρήματα καθώς θα παιρνούν. Πέρσι, κατάφεραν να μαζέψουν €18,500,και ευελπιστούν να μαζέψουν περισσότερα φέτος, αν θέλετε να κάνετε μια δωρεά έχω βάλει περισσότερες πληροφορίες στο Supplement.
WALKS
Apologies (again) to the trekkies for dragging them through some of the roughest and steepest terrain in the whole Pissouri area. Great fun! On the other hand, lots of brownie points for this morning’s walk from Plataniskia down to the ruined village of Kato Archimandrita. Weather and scenery beyond compare.
A suggestion for all walkers: following the prodigious rain and consequent lush growth everywhere, arm yourself with insect repellent. Wee beasties are out in force now.
Your full walks programme is in the Supplement and on the website. This week’s poddle will be a super walk underneath the Melounda Plateau. Best guess about an hour and a half again.

ΠΕΡΙΠΑΤΟΙ
Απολογούμαι ξανά στους πεζοπόρους που για ακόμη μια φορά τους πήρα στο πιο δύσκολο και πιο απόκρημνο μέρος του χωριού. Αλλά, η θέα από την Πλατανίσκια ως το ερειπωμένο χωριό της Αρχιμανδίτας ήταν καταπληκτική. Θα ήθελα να κάνω μια εισήγηση στους πεζοπόρους, μιας και η βροχή έχει σταματήσει και υπάρχει βλάστηση παντού, αγοράστε ένα σπρέι για τα έντομα, γιατί υπάρχουν αρκετές μέλισσες και έντομα εκεί έξω.
Missing Link – Google Earth
Grumbles that the link I put for the updated Pissouri map didn’t take you to Pissouri... Markos says go to “Google Maps” on the internet, and type in “Pissouri”. It is brilliant,
except that some prat has been playing around with the map and the Columbia Beach is sitting in the middle of the playing field at the moment....

RUBBISH
Oh dear, oh dear! And, when the person who saw this being dumped reported it to the Village Office, the reply was “there are no red trucks in Pissouri”. Ever since when, every truck that goes past seems to be red!

SPRING: The Square is waking up.
Nicos at the Symposium has been a great focus of activity in the Square over the winter, but slowly the Square is waking up. A message from the Tavern in the Square, tells us that they are now back in action too. See their ad in the Supplement.

Ο Νίκος από το Συμπόσιο έχει γίνει το επίκεντρο διάφορων δραστηριοτήτων κατά τη διάρκεια του Χειμώνα αλλά σιγά σιγά και η υπόλοιπη πλατεία έχει αρχίσει να αποκτάει κάποια κίνηση. Το Tavern in the Square μας ενημέρωσε πως θα ξεκινήσει να δουλεύει σύντομα.
DANGEROUS FIREWORKS
We spoke too soon about fireworks being under control. There were some pretty big bangs out there last night, and the Police were doing their best. There was, apparently, a real problem with some army ordnance sized explosives, sufficiently dangerous to have been reported on the national news, which were uncovered by the Police after a tip-off.

Υπήρξαν μερικές μεγάλες εκρήξεις χθες το βράδυ αλλά η αστυνομία κάνει καλή δουλειά . Υπήρξε ένα μεγάλο πρόβλημα με κάποια εκρηκτικά που βρέθηκαν στο χωριό, το οποίο είχε μεταδοθεί και από τα ΜΜΕ.
