Beaches

Please treat the sea with care, especially if you are swimming on an isolated beach. Beware of drinking alcohol and swimming. If there are marker buoys swim only inside the safe area. Always keep the beach and the sea clean. Respect our environment.

PISSOURI BEACH

Pissouri-Beach

Pissouri Village is set high on the edge of an ancient escarpment, looking out over the distant Mediterranean horizon towards Africa.   Pissouri beach is a scenic 2.4 km scenic drive downhill from the Village. In days only recently gone by, the Bay was a beautiful, isolated golden beach, an undisturbed agricultural area. It was busy only when the valuable local carob harvest was shipped out from stone warehouses, still standing today. Today, it is renowned for its golden sand, multi-coloured small pebbles, gentle waves and crystal clear blue sea.

LAHANIKA

bus_024This beach is so inaccessible I forgot to tell you about it.

It is directly down the cliff westwards below the Cyta Mast and Stathmos.

It is only for the seriously fit and able.   Even if you come by boat be wary of swimming here, except very close to the beach where it is good to cool off after a trek down to the beach.   But beware, there will be no-one to rescue you if you get into trouble.   Either in the sea or in the area behind the beach, which is called "Lahanika", meaning "vegetables"...   Presumably, once upon a time, an area renown for wild veg.

NUDIST BEACH

Secret_Beach

Yes, Pissouri has a well-known, fabulously-located nudist beach.   It is accessed from the Secret Beach by walking a few minutes along the coast to the west (towards Pissouri).  It is inaccesible except on foot or by boat.

There are a few drawbacks for genuine naturists.   One is the gawpers who like to view the beach from cliff-top edge above.

The second is rather more problematic:  nudism is illegal in Cyprus.   However, this beach is isolated and inaccessible except to those who are determined to go there.

BOOSURA/CAPE ASPRO

Cape-Aspro-_Boosura

This tiny beach is in a dramatic, spectacular, wild area, 5-10 minutes walk along the coast to the west of Monte Beach, the abandoned restaurant at the western end of Pissouri Bay.   Park behind the restaurant, and there is a track going along the cliff face.   It is very narrow and precipitous in places, and not for anyone who is afraid of heights.   However, it is perfectly walkable - it is a favourite of the walking group - but you walk this path entirely at your own risk.   The path changes depending on weather damage:  if you find stones blocking the track, this is an indication to take an alternative path.

CURIUM BEACH

374422_10150365909424001_580434000_8396208_72188218_nIf you are taking in the archaeological site at Curium, towards Limassol, you may well want to stop at one of the restaurants on the beautiful long sandy beach below, from where you can watch the sailing or the hang-gliding from the cliffs above the beach.

Because this beach is nearer to Limassol, it can get very crowded, and the sea can get rough.

PARAMALI BEACH

IMG_3006paramalibeachThis is an unspoilt, long sandy beach off the beaten track.   You will have to work out how to find it from the B6 which goes through Paramali Village.   This is a turtle beach, so no dogs.

MELANDA BEACH

A lovely spot on the way to the Secret Beach.   This beach is about 5 miles east of Pissouri. Motorway or B6 to the Avdimou exit, follow the signs to Melanda Beach Restaurant. There is a very good beachside restaurant here with fresh fish and pleasant atmosphere.

AVDIMOU (KYRENIA) BEACH

June_Walk_005

A huge sandy beach, again in an stunningly beautiful, unspoilt rural area.   This beach is on the Sovereign Bases Area, so is - for the time being - protected from development.

A special attraction for this beach is the Kyrenia Beach Restaurant, right on the beach, run by Soteris, a refugee from the North, and his family.   This is a very popular outing for people from all over the area.

Aphrodite Hills have a pavillion next to the restaurant on the beach and bus customers over to enjoy this superb location.

As you leave the motorway at the Avdimou exit you turn towards the sea and follow the signs.   Take care - the road is very narrow.

APHRODITE HILLS BEACH

AH2APHRODITE COASTLINE

There are many small, inaccessible beaches along the coastline from Pissouri to Paphos, from Aphrodite's Rock to Kouklia.

The two most accessible, and controlled, beaches are Aphrodite's Rock and Aphrodite Hills.

There is a large car park above the beach directly opposite the main entrance to Aphrodite Hills, but you can also, if you are brave enough, drive down a path to the beach.

This is a large, beautiful beach with some sand, wonderful to snuffle along, but you should only swim when the sea is calm.

About 4 miles from Pissouri.

SECRET BEACH

Poddle_083

This beach is a gem - for the moment, until development encroaches too close.   It is accessible only by dirt tracks, but it is a beautiful tiny beach, ideal for picnics, sunbathing and snorkelling in an area which is Cyprus as it must have been long ago - totally unspoilt. It is not likely that this will remain the case for too long, so enjoy it while you can.

To get there, you need to take either the motorway to the Avdimou turnoff, or the old B6, and then follow the signs to Melanda Beach restaurant.   But instead of going to the restaurant, keep going westwards along the coast on a dirt road, as far as you can go (about 1 mile on the dirt road).

There are, of course, no lifeguards on these remote beaches, so you are responsible for your own safety.   Don't swim when the sea is rough.

And keep it clean please.   Do Cyprus a favour ... take a black bag and do a litter pick if necessary!
