C3A – PISSOURI LECTURES

 This is the note the C3A have sent to give us notice of a series of lectures which will start on Thursday 27^th January at  10.30 am in the Amphitheatre meeting room:

Cyprus C3A, formally Cyprus U3A, was founded in 2009 and is registered with the Ministry of the Interior.  It is based on the pattern of the  U3A (University of the Third Age) in the UK and  is a learning co-operative of older people which enables members to share their many educational, creative and leisure activities  We are a very friendly organisation whose activities are focused around special interest groups, one of which is the Origins of Man group.

This group, currently comprising four members, has for the past 18 months been researching the evolution of Man.  Although we can at best be described as enthusiastic amateurs we now feel we would like to share what we have learnt with others who have an interest in this subject.  With this in mind, we are proposing to give a series of talks (to a maximum of 9) covering a range of subjects within what is a huge area of interest, and one that is growing on a daily basis.

Some of the subjects we hope to cover include the role of climate change and geology in the origins of Man, the work of Darwin and investigative techniques paleoanthropologists now have that weren’t available to him, the fossil evidence for the evolution of Man from the earliest times to the development of Homo Sapiens and the expansion of Man across the globe. We will try to be as up-to-date with our information as possible.

We are intending that each talk will last approximately 45 minutes, followed by a question and answer session (though we can’t promise to have all the answers) and concluding with an update on any new information that is emerging.  Input from members of the audience will be welcomed.

The talks will be held in the room under the amphitheatre in Pissouri on the fourth Thursday of each month, and starting at 10.30 am.  There are, unfortunately, no facilities for drinks but as the amphitheatre is not far from the centre of Pissouri there will be a choice of venue available after the talks. The talks will be free to current members of the C3A.   For others there will be charge of  €1 per talk.  For those who would like to join the C3A itself, the annual membership fee is €10.
