GLUTEN-FREE
Many thanks to Nikki Dake, Pissouri’s resident nutritionist, for the following:
“Further to your request, I have several places where gluten-free is available, but nowhere where everything is stocked under one roof any more.
There is a selection in all supermarkets on the ‘health-food’ section. This is mainly pasta and breakfast cereal but some other things according to the market. Lysiotis is probably the best.
In Limassol there is BioSpiti on Ayia Sophia, which is near to the Orphanides at the end of the motorway. Number 94 – biospiti@cytanet.com.cy . Elena there has a great selection and some wonderful organic vegetables. If your request needs long term gluten-free, then Elena will get it.
In Paphos there is Biolouc on the Tremithousa – Tala road which goes off left from the Mesoyi road. It’s on the left hand side. Loucas grows his own veg locally which makes an appearance in the shop on Monday and Friday afternoons. I will attach a pix which will show you how good this looks. They also have gluten-free in small quantities but would probably get more things if asked - another Elena is in charge there – elenaprn@cytanet.com.cy . I only discovered this yesterday and saw they had flour, cereal, pasta and things like xanthum gum which is needed in baking. I think our deli also has this.
Both places have good sources of beans which are hard to find elsewhere – aduki etc.
Use as appropriate ….
Cheers
Nikki."

".............No hassle at all – all this was dealt with and published in Pissouri Contact shortly after your query. I assumed you were a reader!!
It will be on the website in one of the newsletters: just do a search for “gluten” and you should be away. Let me know if you can’t find it for any reason and I will dig it out for you.
Daintre”.

“Thanks Daintre, found it! Is there a Cypriot phrase we could use in restaurants to ask for gluten free on the menu?
Geoff”
From Daintre:
“Glad to be of help!
Coincidentally, with the power off this morning, reading the newspaper, I found an ad for gluten-free products. These are finax from Sweden, their website is www.specialdietcy.com , telephone 99 575356, email panikosh2@hotmail.com.
Also in the ad is the name for gluten-free products: Προϊόντα Χωρίς Γλουτένη: Proeeonda horis gluteni. Marvellous!! In a restaurant you should ask for fiyeetoh horis gluteni. You can see in the Greek where the accents are. Or just copy and paste the original Greek and carry it with you.
Daintre.”
