ANOYIRA

Anoyira is a very pretty Village just below the edge of the Ha-Potami gorge - it is about 170 m bove sea-level.   You can follow the lane uphill through the Village for the spectacular view across the Gorge.

The Village is still relatively unspoilt, many of the ancient buildings being beautifully restored.   Archaeological remains abound in the area, but unfortunately the once-beautiful surrounding countryside is largely destroyed by years of (on-going) stone extraction.  However, the countryside further away is not only still beautiful but excellent walking country.

On the main road into the Village are the very beautiful ruins of an old Byzantine monastery, Stavros Timios.

The excellent Nicolaides family winery is in the heart of Old Anoyira (see the Winery Trail tab).

Anoyira is well worth a visit, it is a very pretty village with various places of interest.  In the Carob Museum you can learn all about the various uses of the locally grown crop.  On the outskirts of the village there is a farm that specialises in the making of Halloumi, Annari and Yogourt, all made from milk from their own sheep and goat herds, some of the best on the island and best of all you can buy it there and you know that is very fresh.  A visit to OLEASTRO will tell you about the history of making of olive oil with working models showing how it was produced in yesteryear.
