Widespread spraying is undoubtedly causing havoc in the Cyprus environment, not just to bees - vital for crop pollination - but to the entire food chain. This from the Cyprus Green Party:
PRESS RELEASE
The Cyprus Green Party expresses grave concerns about the complaints it has received concerning the spraying of the citrus trees in the Fasouri area, which has caused the deaths of thousands of bees (photos attached). This phenomenon concerns not only the region Fasouri. Unfortunately complaints are coming in from other parts of Cyprus as well (eg Kaminaria).
We all know the high ecological importance of bees and their role in nature. Without the bees there can be no natural pollination of flora and thus physical continuity of life and mankind. It is expected that next week the effect of spraying will increase because the fruit trees are coming into blossom. Beekeepers fear for the survival of the bees once the spraying has started in earnest.
The Cyprus Green Party urges farmers to be particularly careful when spraying at this time, (especially with the citrus trees). It is important to follow the instructions on the labels of pesticides to prevent abuse. Excessive spraying is anti-ecological and detrimental to the plants, bees and hazardous to public health. It is time for our farmers to obtain the necessary logistical and financial assistance to switch to organic farming
