Vehicles purchased in Cyprus will normally be registered by respective car dealers, whether the car is new or a recognised Japanese/UK import.
All imported cars, both new and second hand, and local cars over 3 years old require a MOT certificate once every two years; this is produced after a now comprehensive check by a government recognised vehicle inspection centre at a cost of 45 Euros after which the certificate is forwarded to the MOT authority in Nicosia, which will eventually produce a small disk type MOT certificate for the owner. Don’t be too surprised if this does not arrive! In the meantime it is worth copying the vehicle inspection centre certificate and keeping a copy in your car in case you are stopped by the Police. If a motor vehicle in Cyprus is not MOT’d or the MOT has run out, then the vehicle is no longer covered by insurance. If therefore your MOT is not in date, then your insurance company will not pay out if you have an accident.
